There is 5 linga in the temple, that’s why it is known as Pancha Linga Nageshwara Temple. The name of 5 lings are Sri Nageshwara, Choleshwara, Kali Kamateshwara, Karaneshwara, and NagareshwaraThe first shrine 2 shrines named Nageshvara and Nageshvarasvami were established during the reign of the Ganga Dynasty (Kings Nitimarga I and Ereyappa Nitimarga II, ruler of the dynasty). The other three shrines were established by Chola Dynasty in the 11th century.
There are inscriptions on the inner walls of the temple which were written in Kannada and Tamil.
